When's the next bus due?

Hello, yes we are still here and will try to breathe some life into this place now that the evenings are drawing in.

Just a quick mention of TFL's latest offering which is to provide Countdown information via the web or  via SMS (although the latter costs so use with caution). You can find out which buses are due and when at our local stops by visiting the TFL site and entering the post code or by using the bus stop numbers. For ease of reference our local stops are:

  • 55321 Albert Road (102, 299, 184) towards Muswell Hill
  • 57381 Albert Road (102, 299, 184) towards  Bounds Green
  • 73435 Palace Gates Road (Bedford Way) (W3) towards Wood Green
  • 51032   Palace Gates Road (Bedford Way) (W3) towards Finsbury Park

All you need to know is how long it takes to walk to the bus stop and you can leave the house confident that a bus will be along jsut after you arrive - or perhaps not. Preliminary tests seem to indicate that it is reasonably accurate, but please don't blame us if you miss that appointment!

Save Libraries Day - 5th February

Today there is a national day of action aimed at highlighting the pressures on public libraries. Please go to Alexandra Park Library today and borrow some books. If you're not a member - please take the opportunity to join. Although Haringey are not planning to close any libraries at present, there will be a £200,000 cut in their staff and book budget.

Libraries are important, they are a FREE gateway to recreational reading, information and education. So borrow a novel by an author you've not read, find a biography or pick a recipe book and cook something new, help your children with their homework or just expand their horizons.

It's a very sad society where libraries are faced with "use it or lose it" Please stand up for libraries and visit yours today. If you use Twitter search for the hashtag #savelibraries and see what is going around the country today.

Incinerator planned for Pinkham Way

Courtesy of the folks over at the Bowes and Bounds Connected site we have discovered that there are proposals in the pipeline to have a Waste Incinerator built on land just south of the North Cirular at Pinkham Way. Interestingly this seems to come under the auspices of Barnet despite apparently being within Haringey's borders. Rather than repeating everything (especially as it is late and it's been a long day) it seems best to refer you over to Bowes and Bounds Connected where you can see the relevant information and get the links to such information as is available. We will though contribute a link to Barnet's page here. If Haringey have anything on their website they are hiding it very well.

If anyone knows any more about this please feel free to leave a comment.

Music recital at St Andrew's - 5th February

There is to be a free recital of violin and piano music at St Andrew's Church, Alexandra Park Road this Saturday, 5th February, at 7.30. The event will include pieces by Mozart, Paginini, JS Bach and Tchaikovsky and is to be given by members of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. There will be interval refeshments.

This is the first in a series of concerts and recitals by Guildhall musicians during in 2011. The next dates are 12th & 26th March. This information was taken from a flyer for this event and from a recent Church bulletin and it would be prudent to confirm the March dates nearer the time. You can find out more by emailing the Parish office at office@alexandrapark.org.

Car Club Parking

Hello - and a very belated Happy New Year. We have emerged from hibernation to find the snow and ice becoming a distant memory, but that it is still a trifle chilly. There are still a lot of road works going on in the area and currently Victoria Road is closed, which is a bit if a pain if you don't notice the "Road Closed" sign at the top of Harcourt Road!

By now everyone should be aware of the plans to put a Car Club parking bay in Clyde Road. This will be at the junction with Outram Road opposite nos 1, 3, and 5 as far as can be ascertained. It isn't the place of this site to comment upon the merits or otherwise of such a scheme, but as one of the reasons for setting it up was to raise awareness of matters such as this we would urge you to make you views known to the council. The closing date for submitting your views and comments is 10th February 2011. You can find out more about the scheme on the Council web site at: http://www.haringey.gov.uk/index/news_and_events/latest_news/car_club_success_means_more_bays_needed.htm and the plans and maps can be found here: http://www.haringey.gov.uk/index/environment_and_transport/parking/consultations/current_parking_consultations.htm . Not the snappiest of URLs!

If you wish to comment on this on here please feel free to do so. Remember that comments are moderated so there may be a delay before a comment appears, and please be polite.

And ... if that all seems a bit serious here is a picture of a visitor to Clyde Road during the Big Garden Bird Watch last weekend. We scored 5 Starlings, 2 Blue Tits, 2 Wood Pigeons and a Robin.

 Bye for now.

The weather outside ...

... is frightful. Well, perhaps not frightful but certainly none too pleasant. As usual a thaw will have set in before there is any sign of a gritting lorry, assuming they can get around the newly built out entrance to the road, so do take care on the road and on the pavements. And if you have an elederly or vulnerable neighbour why not make sure they are OK?

It looks like on the whole we have been quite fortunate in this part of the country compared with those to the south of London, or in the North, Scotland and Wales. Over on the right are a few links to sites we think might be useful and we'll be adding to those. The latest is a link to the live departure boards at Alexandra Palace station which might help in seeing what sort of service is running.

Whilst we don't want this site to dwell on the occasional negative aspects of living in Clyde Road it is worth taking a moment to sympathise with those neighbours who had their cars vandalised last week. There have been suggestions that these were attempts to find sat-navs etc but we aren't aware that anything was actually taken. One suggestion has been made that it is worth leaving your glove-box open to show there is nothing there. Obviously these people knew what they were doing and managed not to disturb anyone, but if you do hear or see anything suspicious do call the police.

Take care out there, and wrap up warm!

A test post via email

As part of the development of the site/blog this is a test posting via email.

It may get deleted in due course.

St Andrew's Bazaar

Just time for a quick plug for the St Andrew's Bazaar which is taking place this Saturday, November 13th, from 2.00-4.30 in the Church Hall at St Andrew's Church on the corner of Alexandra Park and Windermere Avenue. We understand that there will be all the usual features, such as the tombola, a raffle, a cake stall, as well as refreshments.

We're still getting the hang of this business but in due course we hope that it will be possible for other local events to be mentioned on here, either by contacting the editors or by emailing a post in. However, for the moment it's a case of baby steps!

Welcome to Clyde Road N22's very own blog

Welcome indeed. This is the first post on a blog for the residents of Clyde Road N22. With luck there will be some more content coming along shortly. In the meantime this is the equivalent of the roadie doing a soundcheck and seeing if the microphone is on.

By the way - residents of Outram Road, Harcourt Road, Princes Avenue, and of course Albert & Victoria Roads are welcome to visit and drop by. Please remember not to drop any litter.

OK - time to publish and see what happens!
